In Norse mythology, the god Baldur was struck and killed by an arrow made of mistletoe. His mother, the goddess Frigg, then pledged that anyone who passed under mistletoe would be kissed by it if it was no longer used as a weapon. This story is believed to be a possible origin for the modern tradition of kissing under the mistletoe.

The Norse in Scandinavia and the Celts in Ireland and Scotland believed that mistletoe had powers of love, fertility, peace, and harmony. It was used in herbal medicines and in decorations for winter solstice celebrations. It brought in its powers during a time of cold and darkness.
